Shoppers often use plus size tights and leggings interchangeably, but the two do different jobs — and for a retailer, stocking both under one label is one of the simplest ways to grow basket size.

The practical differences
- Tights are footed hosiery, knitted from fine yarn (20D–200D), and worn under dresses, skirts and shorts. They sell on denier, opacity and finish.
- Leggings are footless and cut from a heavier knit, often fleece-lined, and worn as the bottom layer. They sell on warmth, stretch and comfort.
In plus sizes the difference matters more, because both need a secure wide waistband and a considered rise. A control-top tight smooths under a dress, while a plus size fleece lined legging is worn on its own in cold weather.
Where the seasons overlap
Autumn and winter are the crossover months: customers want opaque tights for workwear and leggings for weekends. Stocking one of each in complementary colours lets you cross-sell and keeps the customer inside your brand. In very cold markets, a 200D fleece-lined tight and a fleece legging sit side by side without cannibalising each other.
